Municipal pools are becoming more crucial as climate change makes heat waves more severe

William Wallace, 7, of Clairemont was among those enjoying an afternoon at the Clairemont Pool on Thursday, June 27, 2024, in San Diego. Several of San Diego’s aging municipal pools will get major renovations under a new plan that quadruples the city budget for pool repairs over the next three years from $3 million to $12 million.

The first two pools to get renovated under the new deal, which needs final approval from the full council, are the Clairemont Pool and the Martin Luther King Jr. Pool in Encanto.Councilmember Jennifer Campbell, whose district includes Clairemont, praised city officials for prioritizing the pool there with $1.2 million in renovations. The MLK pool will get new decks for $750,000.

“Many of the new repair projects are the result of the licensed contractor with technical expertise finding that the pools were in a greater state of disrepair than anticipated,” city Parks and Recreation staff says in a report. City officials said they had previously hoped to reopen the Carmel Mountain Pool, the only municipal pool in north inland Council District 5, by the beginning of summer.
