Gas Networks Ireland has unveiled plans to make the €2.8bn business net-zero within 21 years. Its 2045 scheme includes proposals to divide its matrix of 14,725km pipes into two networks to hold only renewable gases with a split of 70 per cent green hydrogen and 30 per cent biomethane.

Gas Networks Ireland chief executive, Cathal Marley, said: "Repurposing of the gas network will be key to the delivery of Ireland’s climate objectives while ensuring security of energy supply is maintained and economic growth is protected.READ MORE: AIB & Bank of Ireland to offer home retrofitting loans with lower interest rate

"While achieving this network transformation has a number of dependencies including the availability of renewable gases and supportive energy policies; Gas Networks Ireland is committed to transitioning the network to exclusively transport renewable gases such as biomethane and hydrogen, ensuring a fully decarbonised energy system by 2045."1. 3. Repositioning Phase From 2033-2040 the company will focus on green hydrogen as volumes grow alongside wholesale gas network repurposing, to prepare for the move to renewables only by the end of 2040, when it is expected 46 per cent of gas on the network will be hydrogen, 38 per cent biomethane and 16 per cent natural gas.
