Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Kean as the organisation's next chair, saying the long-serving state Liberal MP was "uniquely qualified" for the position.Matt Kean has been appointed to lead the Climate Change Authority.

He understood it as a member of the NSW government and he understands it as someone who has focused his working life in recent years on making a difference." After the 2019 election he was given the energy and environment portfolio in Gladys Berejiklian's government, and became treasurer and later deputy Liberal leader under Dominic Perrottet.
