Matthew Helmbold, transportation director for the Gates Chili Central School District, plugs an electric bus into a charger Tuesday, March 5, 2024. Rochester, N.Y. -- Concerns are running high over the state's electric bus mandate which says all buses purchased in the state must be zero-emission by 2027.
Following the 2024 school budget vote earlier this month, Gananda Central School District was one of the districts that did not have EV buses in their budget. According to Greece, Penfield, and Chuchville-Chili's school budgets, they are also opting to buy diesel buses rather than electric ones because of the cost. Churchville-Chili did have EV buses in its budget but it was rejected in the vote.
"We are in favor of moving to greener opportunities and green buses," Van Scoy said. "I think the concern is that there isn’t a pathway forward that has been identified at this point."
