Texas officials want you to conserve water and energy so much that there’s a tax-free holiday for both.
Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar reminds residents of last year’s hot spring and summer while promoting the state’s Water-Efficient Products and Energy Star sales tax holidays that start Saturday and continue through Monday.“If you have lived through a Texas summer, you know that triple-digit temperatures, outdated water systems and inefficient appliances can put a strain on our water supplies and power grids,” Hegar said in a press release.
Some exclusions may seem arbitrary, but what’s in and out of a sales tax holiday is mandated by the Texas legislature.The Energy Star sales tax holiday covers refrigerators priced below $2,000 and air conditioners under $6,000. Other energy savers that are tax exempt include fluorescent light bulbs, ceiling fans, dishwashers, dehumidifiers and washing machines. But many appliances aren’t exempt such as water heaters, clothes dryers, freezers, stoves, wine refrigerators and kegerators.
