A novel method developed by researchers has the potential to significantly boost the output of nickel ore extracted for use in electric vehicle batteries.
Aiding in this mission, the project aims to reduce mining waste and the US’ dependency on other nations for battery materials. To improve cathode manufacturing, Talon’s processing specialists will work with MERF scientists to calibrate the purity and composition of the iron compounds. Producing cathodes of commercial quality is the team’s goal.
“These impurities could actually enhance the cathode’s performance. Battery manufacturers often intentionally introduce small amounts of metal impurities into cathode materials — a process known as doping — to enhance their performance,” said Donghyeon Kang, a material scientist at Argonne.
