Energy and environment lawyers have led promotions at top-tier firms, as the legal industry targets the energy transition as the next big source of billings.

Ashurst appointed a record 17 local partners in its latest round of promotions, timed to coincide with the beginning of the UK fiscal year, while HSF promoted nine lawyers to the partnership. Allens tapped five to join its partnership at the beginning of July.

Ashurst global chair Karen Davies said there was pent-up client demand for expertise in the energy transition at a time when corporate practice areas, traditionally the top money-spinners for big firms, remained unpredictable.in the short term, as M&A work remains “slightly quieter” according to Ms Davies.

Intellectual property lawyer Maria Sun, a new partner at Ashurst, said she pursued her practice area because of a “personal affinity with IP, and particularly branding”. The legal market’s shift towards the energy transition inevitably brushed up against her own practice, with a profusion of new renewables technologies and companies requiring IP advice.“You’re in it for the long haul, so find something you’re passionate about,” Ms Sun said.

Laurelle Ko, a new projects and energy partner at HSF, said she only began to consider the partner path in recent years.“At a point you get to a level where you think about going into an area that isn’t just limited to technical skills, but that path doesn’t have to be linear,” she said.
