Independent arbitration will provide a quicker and more cost-effective means to settle disputes between supermarket retailers and their suppliers says Tanya Barden, the CEO of the Australian Food and Grocery Council. “Under a mandatory code, the suppliers really have to go to a court in order to raise a complaint,” Barden told ABC TV. “That’s one of the concerns that we’ve had with the mandatory code.
They’ve done that. We commend them for it. And we commend the government for pushing that issue through.” Barden said suppliers feared retribution. “One of the things that Dr Emerson has recognised is the fear of retribution that suppliers face.
