BACOLOD CITY – Mayor Albee Benitez here has extended the moratorium on unregistered electric bikes and e-trikes for 30 days.Benitez issued a memorandum order addressed to the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office on May 24 for the extension of the moratorium on the apprehension and issuance of citation tickets for unregistered electric vehicles until June 24.

He had earlier directed barangay officials to submit a list of accredited e-bike operators in their barangays, the basis for the issuance of their licenses or permits to operate. Benitez reiterated to barangay officials to abide by the Department of Interior and Local Government 2020 Memorandum Circular 2020-036, which prohibits tricycles, pedicabs, and motorized pedicabs from operating on national highways.

The regulation of e-bikes and e-trikes aims to ensure the safety of the commuters and the drivers on the road, according to Benitez.Meanwhile, a vendor died and his younger brother was injured after their tricycle was sideswiped by a pick-up truck driven by a soldier in Barangay Tapi, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental on Monday, May 27.Baldomar was declared dead in a hospital and his younger brother sustained abrasions in the left eye.

Police said that both parties have reached a settlement and the 44-year-old soldier has been released from police custody.
