A relatively modest investment in grid-enhancing technologies can almost double the capacity on existing lines.

To protect the state’s economic future, fortify the grid, and keep electricity bills from skyrocketing, it’s time to invest in transmission improvements that can deliver the clean electricity Texans need and want.The state can and should squeeze everything out of its current transmission system — in part with a relatively modest investment in grid-enhancing technologies. These include, which can almost double the capacity on existing lines, and systems that better direct traffic on power lines.

Today, much of the state’s lowest-cost clean electricity is generated far from urban centers, reaching consumers on big transmission lines that crisscross Texas. ERCOT acknowledges transmission planning could be improved to keep up with these needs. Clean generation is now being built close to cities, but local systems aren’t yet equipped to handle the needs of new users and generators.
