What do a shark and a computer have in common? They both have megabites! I once had a stint as a stand-up comic. It may seem like a far cry from advising global leaders in seismic organisations, such as Google, Siemens, Unity Trust Bank and National Grid. But an experience like stand-up teaches you about a quality vital to success: resilience.

When you think of resilience, you might think of a post-war apron-clad woman, making-do and singing the praises of lard and spit. But resilience is far closer to humour than to grit, because it’s rooted in an outlook I’ve spoken about many times: optimism. Facing difficulties, or navigating a sea of negativity in the news or economic agenda, is as they say, life. How you face it – by shrugging and giving up, or facing it head on and finding a solution or way out – depends on your resilience.

Resilience matters because the ability to focus on new ideas and solutions is a priority for the energy sector when tackling climate change. Siemens Energy in Berlin is an example of one of the organisations we’ve supported. The brief was to use our expertise in innovation, marketing, and communications to create a state-of the art innovation centre for Siemens. It’s interesting that shark movies have made a return this summer.
