But 52 per cent want to keep the current 2030 target or try for a more ambitious one.Voters have backed Labor’s 2030 climate change target by a narrow majority after Opposition Leader Peter Dutton dismissed it as unachievable, with 52 per cent saying the government should stick to its goal or make even deeper cuts to greenhouse gas emissions.
The findings in the Resolve Political Monitor, conducted for this masthead by Resolve Strategic, highlight a shift in sentiment in the electorate when Dutton is blaming the government’s climate policy for the rising cost of living., Dutton is planning to go to the next election with a promise to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 using nuclear power, with no interim target and a pledge to remain in the Paris Agreement on climate at the United Nations.
“His policy is a policy that will lead to higher electricity bills for Australians,” Foreign Minister Penny Wong said on Sunday.The survey reveals a falling sense of urgency about climate change among voters, with 41 per cent agreeing that Australia should act now on the problem even if it involves significant costs – down from 51 per cent who said the same before the last election.
“It’s tempting to think that there’s a new climate war erupting, but voters don’t see it that way, at least not yet,” Reed said.“People may hold views on climate change, but only 7 per cent of Australians nominate it as a priority now compared to 54 per cent citing the cost of living. The findings on the 2030 target are based on survey results from 1607 voters who were polled from last Tuesday to Saturday, at the height of the debate about Dutton’s position and the consequences for climate policy. The results have a margin of error of 2.4 percentage points.
