CPS Energy News

CPS Energy expands power purchase agreement with Avangrid, more than doubling the amount wind power it receives from the company’s Kenedy County farm.

CPS Energy has more than doubled the amount of wind power it draws from Peñascal Wind farm in Kenedy County to 161 megawatts after expanding an existing power purchase agreement. CPS now gets nearly 40% of the wind-generated electricity produced at energy company Avangrid’s farm South of Baffin Bay. The revised 15-year purchase agreement increased CPS’ share of megawatts from 77 to 161 megawatts, enough to power about 41,000 homes on a hot Texas day.

” ALSO READ: Why is CPS spending so much to keep adding more power plants? The additional 84 megawatts of wind power for CPS’ portfolio comes as the city-owned utility works to compensate for the 2,249 megawatts associated with planned plant retirements at aging coal- and gas-fired plants before 2030. CPS plans to become carbon emission neutral by 2050.Already, CPS has added 1,710 megawatts of natural gas in a recent purchase agreement from a national energy company leaving the Texas market.
