The Rich Lister, who is eligible for the power bill rebate on several of his homes, says the money would be better spent on households that desperately need it.

The billionaire mining magnate – along with other Australians wealthy enough to own more than one property hooked up to the power supply but which they don’t need to rent out – stands to save thousands of dollars on bills next year because the scheme is so broad.The Rich Lister owns more than 20 properties and many of them are not rented out. The energy bill rebate – announced in this week’s federal budget at a cost of $3.

Fellow Atlassian co-founder Scott Farquhar could also get several power bill rebates. Mr Farquhar is known to split his time between the, a four-bedroom Scottish-style baronial castle with sweeping views of Sydney Harbour, and his beach houses along NSW’s Central Coast. Hotel mogul Jerry Schwartz, who owns one home and stays at his hotels when travelling outside of Sydney, lauded the power bill scheme even though it offered more relief to people who owned multiple homes as he believed it was a deflationary measure.
