Vehicle parts suppliers are driving a lot of the innovation that’s happening in the auto industry these days, and tech demo days conducted at the nearby M1 Concourse car-condo/handling track facility just north of Detroit provide a great opportunity to try these new ideas out. Here are five that caught our attention at ZF’s Next Generation Mobility Days event.

Practically every vehicle with independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering transitioned to electric power steering assist eons ago, but live-axle front suspensions require recirculating ball steering, and up until now most of these have relied on hydraulic assist—often provided by an on-demand electric pump. ZF demonstrated a steering gear equipped with an electric motor and 20.5:1 reduction gear for assistance.
