The average household energy bill is to fall to its lowest point in two years from next month after Ofgem lowered its price cap

Families are being told to send their energy meter readings this weekend to make sure they don't pay too much when cheaper prices start on 1 April.

So, instead of paying £1,928 for gas and electricity, families in England, Scotland and Wales will pay £1,690 - that's £238 less over a year or about £20 less each month. Families who are on a standard variable tariff will spend about £127 on energy in April, less than the £205 they spent in March.

Uswitch found that a quarter of people who hadn't given a meter reading in the last three months said they forgot. 17% said it was "too much hassle". 14% of people who hadn't given a meter reading didn't know how to read their meter. 12% said they didn't even know where their meter was. Ben Gallizzi, energy spokesman at Uswitch.com, said: "We urge any households without a smart meter to submit their meter readings this bank holiday weekend, so their supplier has an updated and accurate view of your account on or around April 1.
