Breaking: PG&E said it may need to keep imposing blackouts in California for up to 10 years to reduce the risk of sparking fires

PG&E Corp.’s chief executive said Friday that it could take as long as 10 years for the company to improve its electric system enough to significantly diminish the need to pull the plug on customers to reduce the risk of sparking fires.

Bill Johnson, who joined the company in May, made the disclosure at a California Public Utilities Commission hearing where the panel’s president, Marybel Batjer, sharply criticized the company’s “inadequate execution” of a shutoff in which it turned off power to large portions of Northern...

they are protecting 'THEMSELVES' before protecting the people. Unreal.

... because it take that long to upgrade their infrastructure. Asshats.

The sad thing is is there cutting cell phone lines Towers off and landlines as well to other states

PG&E won’t even be around in 2 years...

That's right

Check out our recent show where we discuss PG&E, couples and finances, and co owning property Listen to S1 EP3: Managing Finances With Your Significant Other from The Free Retiree Show in Podcasts.

Next bill from CA legislature will shut down power 'every time the wind blows' pgeshutdown GavinNewsom GavinMustGo

California is like a 3rd world country at this point

Solution to stopping wildfires implementable at relatively low cost: Looking for development partners.

That's what happens when people don't have options or have limited options. Providers just don't have the incentives to be better. Sure , you might not like their service , but where else are you going to get it from?

Best argument for building out a decentralized power grid instead of depending on long distance transmission lines. I’m sure the CEO is angling for the legislature to indemnify PG&E for its incompetence. Sound familiar? TARP.

In country awash in nat gas and oil, only California would be this incompetent and corrupt to be unable to provide energy. Break up the monopoly and all competing companies to overlap service. It’s not that hard.

ImDonaldJTrump says rake the forest! That prevents fires!

LOL 😂

Serves them (Newsome) right!!

Hmmm, I am sure Sacramento has done nothing to cause this.

So does everyone get discounts on their bills for the inconvenience.

How much ‘sparking’ do their lines do on a regular basis? Maybe their infrastructure needs an upgrade?

Banana republic of California

California let, and continues to, let builders construct sprawl in high fire areas that will only get worse as California gets hotter and drier. This is the result

*slow clap* Presenting California, the most progressive state in the union.

What?!

So? That's a good thing for the environment. Every state should impose blackouts during their lowest activity hours. Think 12am-3am a night, that's not too much to ask. Leave the factories and gyms alone and shut the rest down. 🤷🏻‍♀️ you're probably sleeping anyway.

California is on its way to Third World status.

angaraian PGE4Me's clarification & other related tweets on the issue merits attention: In any case, MEAIndia shd offer Indian expertise & manpower in fixing electrical system to avoid forest fires in California & elsewhere

Why not fix the infrastructure ?

😆😆😆😆😆

How could this be true? Perhaps dysfunction is being used as a weapon to make one of our greatest states less competitive. But only a cheap, shrewd, non-traditional adversary would do that...

Maybe PG&E should hire Tesla to fix their mess.

stacyherbert You rich white people will just have to have your lights turned off every once in awhile. That'll learn ya. Geesh.

stacyherbert That's some third world country level stuff. Get your shit together America.

DanielStrauss4 Wow🤦🏽‍♀️

PG&E must be required to clear and maintain their lines as a first priority (after compensating the victims of their incompetence). No dividends to stockholders until the power shutdowns stop.

Maybe spend money on capital investment, maintenance, r&d, fire prevention, and smaller distributed networks instead of bonuses and stock buybacks

Third world country

Public infrastructure shouldn't be run by private, for-profit corporations. Their priority is to maximize shareholder value, not provide the public a vital service safely, fairly & efficiently.

Welcome to the preview for green new deal

Sounds like the kind of crisis that should be fully managed by a democratically elected body, not the company responsible for failing to prepare for predictable crises.

What.the.flip. No.

My guess, and this is just a guess now.....I will bet this will keep happening every year, ya know, like it has since the beginning of time. Duh.

CA = third world country - geez!

Now on to the big news. The California Governor in a breathtaking move has announced that small plastic bottles have been banned from hotel rooms.

$PCG Some Californian families may require financing support in transitioning to solar panels as a back up to the proposed shut downs in order to minimize risk of wildfires....imo... These are some thoughts...Cali deserves better 🙂

$PCG may consider supporting those communities at higher risk in their transition to using solar energy during the power shut downs...The rest of California can formulate such transition as well...In a SUNSHINE State how could a family be out of power if solar was used?

💩😹

Two years shy of the end of the world.

Move out of California before they close it.

$PCG must consider fasttrack adoption of solar energy generation systems at the particular highrisk places where energy must shut off..California is a sunshine state & solar can provide indispensable during power shut off not to mention economical too imo.

Rip hospitals

Sell California

Gee, just imagine direct action taking even more revenue away from PG&E during those ten years. What electricity you don't sell, you can't bill for. Sounds like a plan!

Maybe better to turn over the operation to another company and totally stiff the debt holders.

SamElizabethan What a joke PGE4Me

Ugh cancel PG&E

But we got solar, and windmills, Vs. new power lines. Dictated by Sacramento.

Sure, majorly inconvenience everyone instead of . . . idk . . . say, fix/upgrade your equipment? Their rates are very high, but they'd rather put all the profits in their pockets than make sure their equipment can be safely operated without causing fires and killing people.

Good grief! Stop bowing to the envirogods and just clear out the dead brush/wood, etc.

well maybe the California legislature needs to rescind its punitive law holding PGE liable for properties damaged by fire (thus bankrupting it). How stupid to bankrupt a vital utility.

Oh dear! Well, based on recent pictures it looks like CA is embracing third-world standards across the board.

Well, guess which state I WON'T be moving to. Texas is going to take all of California's businesses and residents. You can't fuel a socialist regime if you have no productivity.

Paradise Lost...

These are among the unintended consequences of holding them to strict liability for wildfires

Build a wall around the fires. Walls solve everything ask China

mass exodus?

Fine. It’s time for California to abandon its high cost renewables crusade and reinvest in nuclear and greater power line safety. Give ShellenbergerMD a follow.

Bankrupt them and force them to sell assets back to the public.

This is bound to help Nevada's real estate market!

No wonder so many Californians are moving to Idaho

Throw every single board member in jail for 10 years

Incompetents...

Lol. CA third world.
