This story is part of "The hottest day in Phoenix history is June 26, 1990, when temperatures reached 122 degrees — but thanks to climate change, the desert city’s sweltering heat could break this record.
These surfaces absorb heat from the sun during the day. When the sun goes down, the surfaces slowly release the heat. This week, the National Weather Service predicted there will be no more 110 degree days in Phoenix for the rest of the year. Temperatures surpassed this mark on 29 days this summer, which is the fourth most of all time.
She works with cities like Phoenix and Tempe, Arizona, to measure the outdoor conditions and recommend ways to mitigate the heat, which include planting trees, producing more shade, and using more permeable surfaces that don’t store as much heat. She’s looking at various tree species, awnings and umbrellas to see what’s most efficient. She’s also searching for solutions to help cool down parts of urban areas where trees can’t be planted because of underground sewer systems or cables.
hereandnow Wow, this 'climate emergency' has sure been taking its sweet as time.
hereandnow Here we go again... so npr, show me your mathematical calculations linking climate change to weather events please. Thst way, you could tell us which events are actually linked to climate change and what’s not. Oh wait, you don’t have that? More unverified hysteria
hereandnow Constantly changing climate, especially in an extreme environment like the desert, is the reason that natives like the Anasazi occasionally had to relocate or die. Nothing new.

hereandnow **eye roll** Grew up in the AZ desert and heard for DECADES how we were going to lose our sunshine, have feet of snow everywhere and would drown in all the flooding. IT NEVER HAPPENED AND NEITHER WILL THIS!! Climate change is TOTAL BULLSHIT
hereandnow Could but it hasn't. How about reporting it when it does! Speculation is not news.
hereandnow
hereandnow Yeah. That’s what happens when you build a city in the desert 😂 . What do you expect. Snow Don’t be talking bout climate change
hereandnow (((Could)))
hereandnow The city is far too large for a desert environment.
hereandnow Ridiculous
hereandnow They record the temp at sky harbor airport, but fact is temp was really 126°F. Its not as dry either since there are so many pools and golf courses etc as it was before 1960s,humidity has been rising too. Air quality isn't good either till you get above Prescott on I-17. Poison.
hereandnow Where is the best place to be to weather climate change?
hereandnow Concrete and asphalt will do that!!
hereandnow To all the anti-science FOOLS out there: The reason Phoenix hasn't broken the heat record in 30 years is precisely *because of* climate change caused by straws & stuff. Otherwise Phoenix would have broken the heat record every year for the past 30 years, which is normal. Duh
hereandnow It’s a desert!!
hereandnow So the record 'could' be broken? Yes, it could. And it 'could' snow in July. How is this news? Stop with the baiting and fear-mongering already.
hereandnow The ice cap over NYC was 1 mile high .. That is now gone ... This changed over a million years ...when human beings were not on the planet... should we sue the dinosaurs for climate change ?
hereandnow Yay ...public funded dem party propaganda...
hereandnow Only the poles are getting warmer. We had a hotter climate during the Roman Empire. Turning America into a Flintstone-style 3rd world country and pushing global communism will not stop the climate, it will only concentrate the power of the global elite. KissMyButt
hereandnow Wasn't that an episode of The Twilight Zone (The Midnight Sun 1961)? Maybe people should look at oil paintings of waterfalls?
hereandnow You'd think they would have beaten this record by now with all the hysteria you lunatics have been pushing.
hereandnow This is like saying I rolled a dice and got a 5 but due to me rolling it again I may roll a 6. This isn't a prediction but an overblown headline of common sense probability. FakeNewsMedia
hereandnow My tax dollars should not go to you
hereandnow I was golfing that day. Was a warm one
hereandnow Or it could just be a hot summer. Fear mongering causes more carbon dioxide emissions. WALKAWAY
hereandnow Personally, I don’t mind the super hot days! ☀️🌵
KFerrugia hereandnow This just in: NPR states it’s hot in Phoenix in the summer. It “could” happen and then again it might not. You on the left have a horrible track record in predicting our impending doom. It’s unfortunate our tax dollars go to the is leftist “news” organization.
hereandnow But it’s a dry heat! 🙄 👀
hereandnow Hottest year in US history was 1936. GlobalWarming
hereandnow I’m so happy the acid rain and the ozone deteriorating away didn’t kill us back when that was a thing. Maybe we will survive this too!
hereandnow Try lake Havasu. I was happy to move from that hell on earth.
hereandnow The tabloid NPR pushing the propaganda for their benefactors..Google, Facebook, who else NPR? Those are the two big ones though right?
hereandnow Any time now, right? Question - if the highest recorded temperature hasn’t been topped since 1990, could “climate change” be incorrect?
hereandnow Rrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee You know, this crying wolf business isn't just old, it's BORING
hereandnow But you just said it hasn’t been that hot for almost 30 yrs 🤔
KFerrugia hereandnow They survived it in 1990 so what's your point?
hereandnow People can care about the environment and reject climate hysteria
hereandnow
hereandnow So...............what caused the high 29 years ago?
hereandnow We will Die and China will live Maybe we should let in All the Illegals and have a BILLION people in the US. How will that work for Climate Change?
hereandnow And your point is?
hereandnow
hereandnow Phoenix has always only ever had two seasons. Summer and hell.
hereandnow Was the hottest August this year I can recall - was also the coolest May this year - moved to PHX in 1991 and yes PHX is a great city. science trollssuck ilovenpr
hereandnow I know I shouldn't be amazed at all the people who think climate change means 'Well, it's a hot day so we'll just hang out at the pool or not go outside.' If you're truly that ignorant best not to advertise it.
hereandnow I was flying into Phoenix that day for work and had a rental car, dropped off by a previous Rep, waiting at the airport. I opened the car door and was blasted to the ground and couldn't see. Apparently, she had left her mace keychain in the car and it had exploded. Fun times.
hereandnow Could isn't news, literally
hereandnow It's awesome here. Phoenix is the 5th largest city in America, and growing. No one is buying what you're selling
hereandnow At a certain point, certain cities in the southwest will become uninhabitable. Phoenix and Las Vegas come to mind. On a 120+ degree day, if there is a power outage and air conditioning fails, thousands may die.
hereandnow A city built in the desert, flood plain, below sea level, river, lake & ocean front, on hill side will eventually encounter...
hereandnow Humans already are comfortably able to live in places that get up to 122 degrees, yet the media is acting like we won't survive climate change.
hereandnow USE MORE A/C. Simple.
hereandnow Notice FakeNews DNCMediaComplex is desperate at every level, now. When proven FALSE, they just double-down on STUPID. AGW Lie Continues FollowTheMoney DeepState AltLeft FactDenier ClimateCult DemocratEvil DeepState AltLeft TDS ChooseGreatness MAGA KAG2020
hereandnow Fucking prove it. Seriously, prove it. You won’t, because you can’t.
hereandnow Yawn
hereandnow Sucks for a few months. But we also play tennis & golf in January 😀
hereandnow What do people do in that heat? Are homes/cars/streetsbuild for that type of heat?
hereandnow I guess you invest in SolarPanels and AC
hereandnow Specifically how did this happen?
hereandnow boogaboogabooga
hereandnow rent is rising in phoenix, just saying.
hereandnow 122 degrees celsius Wow, that is hot. 😉
hereandnow But due to climate change.... ffs just stop with this nonsense
hereandnow “could”
hereandnow NASA say that Solar Cycle 25 will be the weakest in 200 years, leading to colder weather. Is this true? buyasweater
hereandnow
hereandnow By 'adapt' I think you mean 'leave.'
hereandnow What was the reason back in 1990?
hereandnow So if that record HASN'T been broken in the last 30 years, then we are to conclude what? 🤔
hereandnow Heat island effect. Google it.
hereandnow This would be especially hard on people of Northern European descent.
hereandnow Summer is hot in the desert.
hereandnow Tough shit, they live in the desert 🐪 and there is no climate change. Just ask GOP Congress
hereandnow Then report the climate strikes at top-of-website news!!
hereandnow So hot in the summer that planes can’t leave. What is the alternative? Living like Mole People?
hereandnow carlosriost do you miss it
hereandnow This is on the failed obama admin for doing nothing in regards to this subject matter during his 8 year tenure
