Driving to his work in central Melbourne, Daryl Budgeon had a persistent sore throat, which he blamed on city traffic and air pollution. So he decided to stop contributing to the problem

It was a tickle in his throat that led Daryl Budgeon to buy an electric car.

To put that in perspective, the pie chart below shows the most common fuel types of Victoria’s 3.8 million cars, station wagons and four-wheel drives. But the numbers are increasing. About 0.2 per cent of all new passenger vehicles registered in Victoria in 2017 were electric. Richmond has 139 electric passenger vehicles, the most of any postcode in Victoria. There is a Tesla dealership in this area, but vehicles in the showroom wouldn’t show up in the data, which is drawn from road authority registration data.

“People need to see electric vehicle infrastructure when they are out and about driving to feel confident that they can buy an electric car,” he said.
