Support Zuraida’s waste to energy plans — Sharifah Danisah Syed Ibrahim

MAY 12 — Nobody talks about garbage until they smell the stink. Malaysia has to act soon or face major problems in the future. When we all throw up because of the smell.about the use of Waste to Energy plants, when government was deciding whether to go with it or not. We cannot wait too long.

WTE is more immediate than other, for three reasons. One, it is cleaner with minimum harm to the environment and uses less space, which landfills cannot compare. Two, proven in over a generation across Europe therefore not experimental. And three, it gives energy. Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Finland, United Kingdom and France rely heavily more on WTEs than landfills, and in many cases landfills are below 2%. It's countries like Greece, Malta, Slovakia and Bulgaria who rely heavily on landfills.

The situation is far worse here in Malaysia. We produce more waste, and it is not going to go down in the medium term.
