Matt Gurney: For the overwhelming majority of Canadians, climate change is not their top concern and that's why it's still missing from the Conservative election plan.

This may put me offside with some of my learned columnist colleagues, but I’m not convinced Andrew Scheer has to do anything more on the issue of climate change than say, “It is bad, and we’ll find a way to do our part.”

But will it actually work? Is climate change an issue Canadians care enough about to decide an election on? Colour me unconvinced that an aggressive position on climate change is going to be Andrew Scheer’s path to power. And that’s absolutely fascinating. If the worst-case scenarios regarding climate change are accurate, we’re talking an existential threat to the human race. Four-fifths of Canadians are dialed in on this issue. But only 12 per cent rank it as their top priority.

mmilky400 Climate Change does’t register in my top 100 concerns! Same goes for 90% of my over 35 year old friends, family... Oct. 21st can’t come fast enough to rid us of Prime MISTAKE Justin! 👋🏼👋🏼🌞ways

I think maybe it should read, for old, conservative Canadians... Millennials were raised with a cleaner world as a value, and know that innovation in clean energy is the market of the future, and also the way to preserve their world for their own children.

Well thats wrong. A total of 83% of Canadians say they are quite (26%), very (30%) or extremely (27%) concerned about climate change.

I just don't believe a carbon tax will change the weather.

I guess when people are looking for work jobs come first!

Well, that's how we feel about electoral reform. Of course, ignoring electoral reform won't KILL us, whereas ignoring climate change just might :)

Or is it?

More pro Scheer ghost from Maclean’s. So tiring

Let's follow this low intellect party leader like a black sheep taking us over a cliff. NOT!

Ok conservative propaganda machine

Dear Mr. Gurney. This is an election year. Timing is everything. I think most Canadians can accept the CPC climate policy just prior to the election when provided by a party currently in the position of governmental opposition.

This is 100% NOT the reason. After Trudeau took Harper’s climate plan and failed to meet it, Scheer had nowhere else to go but further right, entering the realm of xenophobia and science-denial. Big Oil sees it as a win-win proposition: Lib or Con.

Alberta has so much cheap mat gas it is literally venting it off and yet Jason Kenny is planning to burn much dirtier coal for longer. Does he care about the environment? Notley has a better plan 30/30

Andrew Smear, Scott MOE, Doug Ford and Jason Kenny do not have climate change initiatives? They would rather waste money in court battles fighting the need for change. Yet Suncor, Husky, And even yes Loblaw suggest the time to do something is NOW.

Who are you polling? Not me or anyone else who understands the gravity of our current climate crisis.

The conservative movement is directly tied to the tar sands...USA has labeled it an environmental disaster. Conservatives trying to sell themselves as caring about the environment would be seen as disingenuous at best.

We already gave up 10 years of doing nothing for Harper. Climate change best be in the top 3 of everyone's list because initiatives cannot wait another election cycle. Only the selfish and the stupid don't care about it.

You are wrong

Bull💩!

Not sure where Maclean’s is getting their information from but you are wrong.

They don't have any platform period. We know what they are. Our children deserve better.

Or taxing Canadians will not stop what has been happening since the day the earth was formed :climate change. It is a disgrace that the MSM continues to attempt to dumb down Canadians by implying that climate change is new and that we are deniers if we don't adhere to this.

Such a mistake, climate change is a very important concern to Canadians, how dare anyone suggest otherwise. It will be a big priority for votes in the next election and especially for future generations. Wake up people!

I’m almost 63, and I’m concerned. If I was 23, I would be VERY concerned. I hope young people will vote, for their futures.

Passengers on the Titanic had no concerns either, they set sail and partied hard. It did not end well for them and likely as we party on it will not end well for us

It's 1 concern for me, because I have grandkids and I'm scared for them. I've never been able to understand why conservatives don't treat climate change like they do budget deficits: you don't leave future generations to pick up the tab for your irresponsibility.

My cold, hard political calculus is that if a political party doesn't give a sh*t about a possible existential threat, and indeed tries to get in the way of one that does, then that party doesn't deserve power.

If the election was within the next month, coupled with the flooding of the past weeks, I believe climate change would be on the mind of the majority of Canadians, and may even sway votes. cdnpoli

Ya because a lot of voters are old and do not give a shit as they will be dead when the shit hits the fan. Thanks for leaving us the mess.

My top concern is the probability of Scheer as the next PM. Absolutely frightening!!

I'm a Conservative and I believe that protecting the environment is important...just don't think that a carbon tax is the way to do it. Our blue box recycling is a sham...we pump raw sewage in our lakes and there is too much plastic in packaging..

Canadians, climate change is not their top concern. I agree with you 100%. Our priorities are: Ensure good life for homeless. Ensure Canadians have decent jobs. Ensure Canadians healthy and happy

It’s my number one priority. Who are you asking because everyone I know cares deeply about climate change. I guess all the Canadians dealing with floods weren’t available for your poll.
