Federal rebates to encourage Canadians to buy electric cars took effect Wednesday, shaving as much as $5,000 off the purchase prices of electric cars.

The rebates were announced in the last Liberal budget and fully electric cars that have starting prices of less than $45,000 are eligible for the full $5,000 rebate. Plug-in hybrids, which combine electric power with traditional combustion engines, can get up to $2,500 off.

But because the company lowered the price of the standard-range Model 3 below $45,000, the $53,700 higher-range version, which can travel 389 km on a single charge, also becomes eligible. In Quebec and British Columbia, which offer their own provincial rebates of up to $8,000 and $5,000 respectively, the federal incentive will be applied in addition to the provincial one on eligible cars.

"At this point in the market the incentive still matters," said Dan Woynillowicz, policy director with Clean Energy Canada.

It's a fucking joke, stop wasting money on foreign aid and put that money for Canadians.

This will help. Still saving. And looking forward to driving clean.

I hate battery operated widgets unless they can go for days on their batteries. Having a car to worry about is just one more POS to nag you as long as you own it: 'Charge me. Don't over drive me. Charge me'. Confession: I am a battery hypochondriac. I charge stuff compulsively :)

Sure, for the rich, who really don't need it! No one else can afford those cars plus all the added costs to hook up a charging line ar home, not mention hydro, yikes

Awesome news 💸💚🎉

Another liberal_party perk for the wealthy. Hopefully to be repealed by AndrewScheer shortly after the October election. Just 5 MONTHS to go!!

This is great news!!

Show me a average Canadian that can drive their car to a junk yard throw them the keys, and go buy a useless electric vehicle for $50k+ not to mention the cost of a charger installation at your home. Then take a trip more than 300Kms. Cheapest Tesla $53,700.+tax range =400Kms

Socialist doublespeak for 'Taking tax payer dollars and giving them to wealthy people so they can buy cars for less'

Stop giving hand outs for electric cars the batteries cause more pollution and destroy more natural resources than a combustion engine

Great move LIBS.. to change the location and kind of pollution to something more hidden... while making chosen groups very very rich. When will big left media do a story on slave kids mining material for car batteries?

Buying an electric car becomes cheaper today as federal rebates kick inFederal rebates to encourage Canadians to buy electric cars take effect today. No. It costs the same before the rebate and after the rebate. It's just that the government has decided that hard-working Canadians struggling to pay increased energy costs must now also subsidize value-signaling by well-heeled urbanites. I’ll buy a real car. Thanks. Thx Trudeau!

Budget watchdog says carbon rebate will be more than carbon tax for most peopleCanada's budget watchdog agrees with the federal government's claim that Canadians are going to get more from the climate change tax rebate than they are paying in carbon tax. Except for the rich who burn more fuel. Just brilliant Liberal party!!! The carbon tax language feels like a failure in branding. I don't have an answer but a tax that puts more money in my pocket, doesn't feel like it should be called a tax

Cut-price Tesla qualifies for new Canadian EV rebateThe maker of Canada’s most popular electric car is now priced to qualify for new federal rebates that take effect today. So basically Tesla just raised the price more so it looks like you getting a rebate 👍🏻 no corruption here at all! Same Car just add to the price make it more expensive. Seems legit! Just another company gauging the ppl! I don’t like that my tax money is going to wealthier people to purchase their ‘look at me’ car
