New modelling to unleash explosive row over climate change costings auspol

The dire new warning from economist Brian Fisher, which is hotly disputed by Labor and countered by other experts, marks a dramatic escalation in the political fight over the cost of taking action on climate change compared to the cost of inaction.

Labor has been bracing for the release of Dr Fisher’s report after weeks of conflicting claims over the cost of its policies, fuelling attacks from Prime Minister Scott Morrison over the impact on the economy. An earlier version of Dr Fisher’s modelling triggered headlines of a “carbon cut apocalypse” in March but was questioned by other economists who said he had assumed very high costs for renewable energy generation and the cost of reducing emissions.

While heavily disputed, Mr Morrison is expected to use the results to mount an escalating campaign against Mr Shorten ahead of the May 18 poll.

'Modelling'.

As a computational scientist who performs 'modelling' getting lumped in with partisan, disingenuous crap like this really grates.

Jobs in renewable energy increased 28% 2016-17 to 2017-18 over the same period mining jobs fell 3.1%

Jobs in renewable energy sector increased 28% 2016-17 to 2017-18

Wow, talk about “selective”. Looks at the cost of losing redundant jobs but what about the jobs that will be CREATED? Straight up propaganda.

5:1 ratio is like something JoFry or AngYo might get on one of their nonsensical tweets. YOU USED TO BE A REPUTABLE NEWSPAPER.

Why is this the conversation we're having? Is anyone going to calculate the cost of NOT doing anything? How about pitting the 2 parties' policies against each other to compare how effective each will be? auspol ausvotes climateemergency

Q: what happens when you ask five economists to analyse something to do with science? A: You get seven different opinions! 😂

Discredited bullshit from a fossil fuel lobbiest. Any semblance of SMH neutrality died with this piece. auspol

When climate change hits, you will have to explain to your own grandchildren why you thought it would cost too much to prevent it.

Why does this photo of Morrison look like he has a mullet?

Morrison, go to hell with your party.

Doesn’t it depend on who dies the stats and how they present (manipulate) them?

You should be investigating the source not publishing his non peer reviewed rubbish

We could save 499 billion and direct theses funds to ClimateAction 👇

So, which party offers the most cost-effective means of meeting the ParisAgreement target of 45 per cent reductions? Or haven’t you been bothered to work that out seeing as you’ve only got two experienced journalists left? auspol AusVotes2019

we have FIAT currency our $ are limitless ..what we need to watch is inflation and the management of real resources..it is really the choice over what policies will do the job not how much $ they will spend..

This is embarrassing for you smh, reporting junk like this.

Wrong modelling? Man made climate change made by man right? Let's say I buy into that. What about man made population growth, definitely uncontestably made by man! Global population DOUBLED since 1970 to approx 7.7billion. Should we at least talk about this unpalatable as it is?

Maybe before SMH and FinancialReview publish a Climate report as something major and truthful, just because the Liberal party says it is, you may want to bother checking out who wrote the report and find out who is funding them. Auspol Ausvotes

So does business want Labor to set a price or does business want to the market to decide? They can't have it both ways. Given we can't see into the future asking Labor for a cost is like asking them to predict how many seats they will win at the election.

The SMH: ‘modelling to unleash explosive row’. God help us. This once great paper is increasingly behaving like a poor imitation of its competitors at rancid News Corp. What’s with the recent flood of naked, purely partisan beatups ffs? One mob doing that is more than enough

Climate change has been with us for 4.5 billion years and will continue until the end of earth.Nothing we do will stop it. Our attempt to moderate its effect is questionable and Australia's contribution to green house gases is negligible. Get over it wankers.

I expect an article tomorrow, with suitable headline, with a rebuttal to this climate change costing! To be fairer and balanced! ClimateActionNow auspol AusVotes19

And you wonder why social media bags the MSM. Why don't you do your job as journalists and stop being stenographers, sheesh.

How do you guys sleep at night, knowing you're intentionally sabotaging Australia enacting policies against climate change?

How do you know it will be explosive? A row between who? What happened to objectivity in reporting?

So over channel nine fucking SMH.

what is the cost of inaction?

GTFOH, Newscorp Lite.

If I hired 20 economists, for sure, I can find one to say anything I want. This is terrible analysis. I suggest, dear , you ask your resident and trusted economist Mr 1RossGittins for his analysis.

Not sure why stirring & giving oxygen to flawed solo 'modelling' by coal consultant BrianFisher frankelly08 challenged AngusTaylorMP on RNBreakfast & Mark_Butler_MP rightly called it 'rubbish' auspol AusVotes ClimateAction ABCmediawatch

When you've done fuck all for 6 years what do you expect? You somehow think it's going to go away?

Is Brian Fisher an independent consultant?

Bad journalism as article did not say anything about Fischer's background as go to person for coalition stance. Crowe appears more intent on stirring up a story than journalism. Of course smh online comment saying same not published.

Climate change alarmism, designed specifically to squeeze more tax from working Australians, persuading them to vote for the useless feminist progressive Left, while playing on youthful anxiety that oceans are rising and snow is disappearing. Brilliant strategy.

Done by pro LNP Consultants , more Porkies all the way to MAY18

More LNP nonsense

Utter bullshit from a biased conflicted so called 'expert' who diagrees with everyone else. Your last line says Prof McKibben estmates the policy will have a negligible effect as opposed to doing NOTHING - stop spreading disinformation AUSVotes2019 ClimateActionNow

Such a responsible body the Climate Council. Is Frightbat Flannery still the head wizard there? A measured individual for sure. Marvellous legacy.

There are two costs Shorten raves on about regarding climate change, and he refuses to quantify both! He is rapidly losing credibility with uncommitted voters!

Nothing to see here. Move on! Just mining industry consultant BrianFisher again with his crazy 'modelling'. It's quoted by Libs because all they have is fear. No policies. He keeps saying Labor will cut wages by $9,000 but voters know that's ridiculous. auspol AusVotes

According to the Climate Council: 'Brian Fisher is the fossil fuel industry’s go-to consultant. The industry has paid for much of Fisher’s so-called ‘research’.' auspol

Power of poo harnessed in new program to deliver renewable energyA pilot plant is set to use the power of poo — or, technically, biogas from human waste — to store and deliver cheap, renewable energy. sounds a bit shitty to me... If we harnessed the ABC's output we could power several medium-sized cities. so apoopriate to use our own waste to help the planet out
