Stress urgent need for department to sign Electricity Regulations Amendment Bill into law and finalise Integrated Resources Plan.

As the country nears 100 days without load shedding, the Energy Intensive Users Group of SA has welcomed the president’s announcement of the new Department of Electricity and Energy. This ministry will act as a policymaker and shareholder for Eskom.

The group notes in a statement that the new ministry will presumably enable Eskom to concentrate on its core mandate without being distracted by the involvement of three separate ministries: Mineral Resources and Energy, Public Enterprises, and Electricity.

The group highlights that the recent reduction in load shedding indicates progress toward resolving the energy security crisis and notes that the country, through the National Electricity Crisis Committee , is taking key steps to transform the industry.SA business and Eskom on track to end load shedding permanently

However, it says much work remains to achieve energy security, affordability, accessibility, and decarbonising the country’s energy mix. The EIUG outlined its expectations for the new ministry, emphasising the urgent need to ensure the Electricity Regulations Amendment Bill is signed into law and the Integrated Resources Plan is finalised.
