I am the editor of independent electric vehicle website WhichEV. I have 30 years’ experience as a technology journalist and a life-long love of cars, so having the two come together has been a dream come true. I first saw the potential for electric vehicles when I became one of the first people to drive a Nissan Leaf back in 2011.

, the world's first hydrogen racing series. At a crowded event on the “party deck” of the St Helena ship that the series uses to move its cars between race sites, the covers were hauled off the new Pioneer 25 vehicle. As a nod to the series’ history, this took place in the shadow of Tower Bridge in London moored next to HMS Belfast – exactly where Extreme E was launched in January 2019.

This illustrates the highly partisan nature of the debate between hydrogen and battery power, which Extreme H will now place itself centrally into. “There are two sides,” says Agag. “You have the battery side, and then the people who don't like batteries love hydrogen for some reason. For example, Michael Andretti has been in Formula E and Extreme E from the beginning, but Mario Andretti, his uncle, doesn’t like electric cars.

As much as anything, Extreme H will be a test run for hydrogen supply infrastructure. “Most places won’t have the scale of Neom, but it’s going to happen at smaller scale elsewhere, like Libya, Namibia or Chile,” says Agag. “We're talking with different governments that have deserts and can then build solar panels or wind and make the hydrogen with that renewable energy plus a water source.

Whether you believe in the value of hydrogen for emobility or not, Extreme H marks a turning point in motorsport, as the first series to use the fuel. The series will showcase the potential of hydrogen as a powerful and sustainable energy source. With the launch of the Pioneer 25, Extreme H is poised to deliver exhilarating races while championing environmental responsibility, as it always has in the past.
