Ireland's top climate body wants the government to urgently review transport taxes after greenhouse gas emissions in the sector rose last year. A sectoral review by the Climate Change Advisory Council praised the 24 per cent rise in public transport use and reduced fares in Ireland last year.
Climate Change Advisory Council chair Marie Donnelly, said: “People must be supported to make sustainable transport choices. For this to happen, urgent delivery of efficient and low-cost public transport at both a national and regional level are required. The CCAC has also called for the reallocation of more road space for active travel and says it is essential the planning of new housing developments provides better access to shops, schools and workplaces with improved public transport links to deliver the change required in this sector.
