Shadow energy minister Ted O'Brien has revealed what the Coalition will do to"get prices down" for its energy plan, as speculation mounts over the cost of the opposition's nuclear approach to net-zero.
Speaking on his party’s energy plan, Mr O’Brien revealed there could be more than one reactor per plant to get costs down. “In terms of exactly how many on any plant, we'll be leaving that to the independent nuclear energy coordinating authority,” he said. While the construction costs for a nuclear power plant remain unknown, National leader David Littleproud said estimates from the CSIRO’s GenCost report, which have the price of a large-scale reactor starting from $8.6b, were"in the ballpark" of the Coalition's potential costings.
The Coalition’s nuclear costings caught the attention of Environment and Water Minister Tanya Plibersek who called on the Coalition to publish the costings for its nuclear plan.
