OPINIONISTA: Renewable energy vehicles can revolutionise South Africa’s public transport system By Vincent Raseroka

South Africa has the opportunity to fundamentally change the way we operate our public transport system – if we take the opportunity that is staring us in the face. If we introduce electric or renewable-energy vehicles to our public transport system, in 10 years’ time we will be running a safe, inexpensive and low-emissions public transport system.

The purchase cost of electric vehicles is still about three times as much as traditional petrol or diesel vehicles, but the benefits of electric vehicles far outstrip those of the vehicles currently on our roads.Secondly, the running costs of electric vehicles are much lower than their petrol or diesel counterparts, and the batteries can be recycled, whereas diesel and petrol fumes merely pollute our air.

Like South Africa, China relies heavily on coal-burning power plants, which has raised criticism that electric vehicles produce even more smog in cities than petrol variants. But a future energy mix that relies more on green energy may soon change this. To do this, we need to do three things. First, we need our policy-makers to make a drastic mind-shift into accepting – and pushing for – new, greener electricity generation, and removing the red tape .
