The greatest were almost invisible doing an immense amount of work winning the ball for fancy backs to fritter away with a kick, to have the forwards repeat the exercise, ad infinitum! As for the backs, the fancier they were, the cleaner their gear was at the end of the match. They’d learnt that once you’ve kicked the ball, no one can lay a hand on you.
