Reliability Standard,Texas,Energy

TC regulators propose a reliability standard limiting power outages to 0.1 days/year as energy demand surges, concerning officials about future grid stability.

The Public Utility Commission of Texas advanced a proposal for publication in the Texas Standard, with the ultimate goal of codifying the reliability standard within the state government code. That rule now goes to the Texas Register, where it will be offered for public comment over the next month, with the goal of ultimate adoption at the end of summer.

More specifically, those outages, known as loss of load events, cannot average more than 0.1 days per year on average, and the outages cannot be expected to last more than 12 hours. In the event that there is a loss of load event, requiring involuntary outages, ERCOT must evaluate the safest ways to implement rolling blackouts.

On the heels of that development, ERCOT's CEO, however, noted that the anticipated demand for energy is expected to grow faster and greater than had previously been expected.
