The food bank was one of four Atlantic Canadian charities to be given a van by CAA Atlantic, which provides roadside assistance to members, during a ceremony in Dartmouth, N.S., on May 27.“This is going to have a huge impact,” Mike MacDonald, executive director of the food bank, said in an interview with SaltWire on May 28 in his office, estimating that the gift is worth $100,000.
“Our business is up almost 50 per cent over last year. This is just another tool for us to get more food to Islanders.”MacDonald said he got a call from Julia Kent, the director of social responsibility and advocacy for CAA Atlantic, in mid-December saying the organization wanted to support the Atlantic provinces and was thinking about supporting local food banks so the highest number of people could be reached.
Kent told SaltWire in a phone interview from her Dartmouth, N.S., office on May 27, that last year CAA Atlantic was in the fortunate position to take on a community initiative. “The idea to donate fully electric food vans was born of that … and we had been advocating for cleaner and greener transportation and dovetailing that in a meaningful way that’s really mission-driven with supporting local food insecurity,” Kent said, adding the vans will save 72 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions compared to a gas-powered vehicle.
Kent added the electric vehicle needs 45 per cent of the service that a gas-powered vehicles does, translating into thousands of dollars that the food banks will save. Dawn Dalley, president and CEO of CAA Atlantic, said in a news release that the organization hopes the vans reduce operating costs and carbon footprint for the food banks.
