The world’s glaciers are shrinking five times faster now than they were in the 1960s. Their melt is accelerating due to global warming, and adding more water to already rising seas, the study found

“Over 30 years suddenly almost all regions started losing mass at the same time,” said lead author Michael Zemp, director of the World Glacier Monitoring Service at the University of Zurich. “That’s clearly climate change if you look at the global picture.”

Zemp’s team used ground and satellite measurements to look at 19,000 glaciers, far more than previous studies. They determined that southwestern Asia is the only region of 19 where glaciers are not shrinking, which Zemp said is due to local climate conditions. This study, “is telling us there’s much more to the story,” said Mark Serreze, director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado, who wasn’t part of the study. “The influence of glaciers on sea level is bigger than we thought.”A number of factors are making sea levels rise. The biggest cause is that oceans are getting warmer, which makes water expand.

Earth's glaciers are losing 335 GT of ice/year: BTW, the Jacobshavn Glacier is still losing mass. Its only gaining some ice at its lowest levels. As a whole, Greenland is currently losing 270 000 000 000 tons of ice a year.

acoyne Wait, what? I just read a news report that the warming atmosphere/oceans were causing the massive Greeland glacier to increase in size.

acoyne

acoyne Uh oh. We better give more money to the Weston family then!!!!

acoyne In related bews Greenland glaciers added 500,000,000,000 tons of fresh new ice this year. Try and keep up sparky !

Surely there must be a way to capture at least some of the melt water from these glaciers. No doubt that water could be better used than allowing to flow into the oceans. If it’s were oil flowing there you can bet there’d be tankers on the way already.

acoyne Keep trying to confuse everyone....cult tactics....ask a real scientist and you will get real answers.....

Clearly we needed a carbon tax 80 years ago!

Finally some good news! Warm this place up!

Didn’t read it. Says only for subcribers. I’m not a subscriber. I cannot subscribe to fifty news channels or more, pay, only to read a few a month. Too expensive. I cannot subscribe to just a few either. Too much bias and misinformation, even from publications like yours! 🤔

Global warming is shrinking glaciers faster than thoughtEarth's glaciers are melting much faster than scientists thought. A new study shows they are losing 369 billion tons of snow and ice each year, more than half of that in North America. Pushing this propaganda non stop since carbon tax came in well when you have a bunch of tourists flocking the area and walking all over them of course they are going to melt.. so stop making up names like global warming and try just caring for the area instead Thought won't shrink glaciers.
