Australia-based Milkadamia is promoting plant-based milk and a plan to address climate change and repair the soil using regenerative farming techniques.

Jim Richards was a macadamia nut farmer in Australia who grew weary of watching the healthful product he cultivated get turned into candy, so he and his team learned to turn the nuts into plant-based milk instead.

Regenerative farming stresses continually improving ecosystems, addressing climate change by capturing carbon in soil, increasing crop yields and making positive changes for the farmers and farming communities, according to Terra Genesis International. In one way, Milkadamia is just one of the latest entries into the fast-growing plant-based milk category.

Milkadamia isn’t the only company that’s promoting these agricultural methods. Big food companies including General Mills and Danone are investing in regenerative agriculture projects as part of their efforts to address climate change and soil depletion. “It’s a lot of old and forgotten farming practices, and it’s all about soil health,” he said. “The test question is, ‘Have you created more topsoil each year? If you haven’t, there’s more work to do. If you have, it shows the health of the whole soil ecosystem.”Plants get nutrients from the soil, so regenerative farming is also a more cost-effective way to grow more nutrient-dense foods without using a lot of chemicals, he said.
