'State and planet': new environment minister highlights plans for climate change action l p_hannam

Matt Kean, the first NSW minister to hold the Energy and Environment portfolio, has told staff the two areas are "critical to the future of our state and planet".

Matt Kean, the new Energy and Environment Minister, has made an impassioned first communication to staff.Mr Kean's comments are the latest sign the Berejiklian government is planning to step up climate action despite making modest promises during the election campaign. "Bringing the Energy and Environment portfolios together will help us tackle challenges such as climate change more holistically, whilst continuing the important and complex work we already do."

He reiterated earlier statements that the reorganisation "in no way changes our commitment to delivering on environmental priorities".Mr Lean also said he had met Jim Betts - the new secretary of the beefed-up Department of Planning and Industry that will oversee Energy and Environment - and had been assured that it would have a "strong environmental agenda, including climate change".
