Buoyant platforms that can weather cyclones and climate change could provide room for crowded coastal cities to grow.

By Ben Guarino Ben Guarino Reporter covering the practice and culture of science Email Bio Follow April 5 at 6:00 AM A company called Oceanix is building a prototype floating island as an experimental solution for crowded coastal cities threatened by climate change, the company told the United Nations habitat program Wednesday.

Amina Mohammed, the U.N. deputy secretary general, said the proposal is more unconventional than approaches the United Nations would have taken even four years ago. “We are trying to adapt,” she said. “We are trying to think ahead.” Although not all governments offer marine leases, those that do, such as the United States, set prices at a few dollars per acre per year, Collins Chen said. The price of land in a coastal megacity is extremely high. “One square meter of land in Hong Kong is $150,000 to buy it,” he said. In the coastal city of Shenzhen, in China, thousands of workers rent cramped, 16-square-foot spaces at $150 a month, Collins Chen said.

And canoes for all !

Probably a necessity at some point

Guess the poor people gonna be swimming

Good idea. Take all of the Greenies and socialists. Please

A. This is stupid. B. Very curious where these Dutch apartment complexes are. Maybe you could provide a link of it actually being completed.

Nuts.

Tell them to live in the ocean and move out of New York City

katiecouric Water world, I’ll go along if Kevin Costner is involved 🤣

Please book one for me.

Yes shit floats.

It may come to that. I have seen some videos of such before. They are already in the making. I believe some architects in the Nederlands have designs....It will be a matter of huge $$$$ to implement.

Is it bold?

It would be so lovely for the ultra wealthy to have the means to float upon the dead oceans. . . .

AGW is a Fraud.

Oh yeah that image right there looks beautiful. Lets all go live on lilly pad cities. What do you mean there's only room for 25,000? What do you mean the entire circumference is secured because of literally billions of starving people trying to get in?

Like Greywater Watch, the seat of House Reed

Did AOC give them this plan? I can hear her, ' we don't have to fly if we have floating cities. These cities will have no farting cows either.'.

Or we could stop chugging dinosaur and billion year old dead plant sauce

New HQ of the UN

The replies are friggin moronic

People: We can stop the seas from rising if we immediately divest from fossil fuels UN: Got it, floating cities for those who can afford it

katiecouric So they can be wiped away by a hurricane. Not such a smart solution, it's just a band aid

where are the seas rising? If the polar ice has (mostly) melted, and the seas are not rising, when will they?

Like in WATER-WORLD ?

We can simple ride out the ocean level rise. Then maybe a few hundred or even thousands of years from now we can get back on land

No one ever told us that dystopia would just suddenly manifest without a violent coup or anything. Very cool world!

Based on Kevin Costner's 'Waterworld.'

If we continue poisoning the oceans and air, this won't ultimately matter.

IT BEGINS

Sounds good to me!

We’ve already seen this movie. It ends poorly!

I'm going to make a fortune on my Dramamine stock.

Hoax
