Already a subscriber?Chevron has vowed to undertake “significant investment” in new gas fields off the West Australian coast, as the federal government considers wielding its “use it or lose it” powers on undeveloped fields held by major energy companies.off the north-west coast held by energy giants, including Chevron, are under assessment by the commonwealth, with the WA government beginning to increase pressure for the assets to be developed or taken away from the companies.
A spokeswoman for Chevron, the country’s largest holder of gas resources, said the company was committed to maintaining the gas production for its Gorgon and Wheatstone gas facilities. Former WA resources minister Bill Johnston last week confirmed he had written to the federal government last year, when he was still minister, suggesting the commonwealth deny a handful of retention licences.
