UCSF infectious disease experts weigh in on the impacts of climate change temperatures and other events change disease patterns

Four years after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, scientists and health experts are anticipating what may come next, particularly as the effects of climate change are poised to increase the spread and scope of infectious diseases.

While the COVID-19 pandemic is in the rearview mirror, several factors could contribute to another pandemic. Cases in California increased by 800% from 2000 to 2019, tripling between 2014 to 2018 alone. There have been at least 9,000 cases reported each year from 2018 to 2022. But climate change’s impact on the spread of infectious diseases isn’t always so obvious. Human displacement from extreme weather events can create situations ripe for disease transmission. Now, researchers are linking the impacts of a warming world to antimicrobial resistance, which occurs when bacteria and other germs are no longer treatable with antibiotics.
