Gelfand criticized successive federal governments, saying their failure to cut emissions is “disturbing,” and urged greater action to tackle what she called one of the biggest challenges facing humanity

The country’s top environmental watchdog also noted Canada is not on track to meet its climate-change targets.Canada has committed to slash carbon emissions 30 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030, but the most recent federal projections show emissions will be only 19 per cent lower by then under the most optimistic scenarios.

Federal scientists said Monday that average temperatures across Canada have increased 1.7 degrees and by 2.3 C in the North since records became available in 1948, and that further warming is unavoidable. She criticized the federal Liberals for failing to live up to a commitment to end “inefficient” fossil-fuel subsidies, which she said encourage wasteful consumption, impede investments in clean energy and undermine efforts to combat global warming.Canada and other Group of 20 countries have pledged to phase out inefficient fossil-fuel subsidies by 2025, and eliminating them was a key campaign promise for the Liberals in 2015.

The International Institute for Sustainable Development has estimated oil and gas producers receive about $3.3-billion in subsidies, including roughly $1.6-billion from the federal government. Examples include reduced property taxes and special tax deductions. “There’s going to be a choice in this next election quite frankly,” Ms. McKenna told reporters in Ottawa. “Our party has shown we have a plan. We’re going to continue to be ambitious. We’re going to continue to grow our economy and create good jobs while we tackle climate change.”

It’s time to turn the page on this government!...

Everybody particularly JWR seems to be ignoring the impact that climatechange will have on FirstNations. What about our treaty & inherent rights? As an Indigenous person I ain't mad at the Liberals at all & in fact thankful for the budget.

How much tax is “enough” then?

WHJO F_Cking Cares!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These a-holes won’t be happy till we are freezing to death in the dark. We need to protect ourselves from these anti-humanists!

Then I would like to know what she drives. Does she know how many rare minerals it takes to make a car.a cell phone? A computer? If we kick her and Trudeau out of office I think we could combat climate change with that alone

You mean China and India is not doing enough.

aka more and more stealth taxation

Neither is China, Korea, Japan , the US, Mexico, Russia....should I go on?

I suggest cutting all politicians pay and pension in half and pay for the clean air they can't stop talking about!

No words. This country is coming apart at the seems. We need to make money.

Interesting a government report quickly released to coincide with Trudeau’s effort to “change the Channel” from his “Obstruction of Justice” Scandal and to support an “election issue” he wants...are Canadians dumb enough fall for this

We are 1.5% of the apparent problem, Canada can do more good by aggressively selling natural gas to China, cutting their 30% global GHG to 15% with clean burning natural gas- but why cloud the issue with facts....

Get those cloudmakers out of the skies geoengineering

I’m shocked, SHOCKED that the day after the doomsday report of our climate comes out and the carbon tax is implemented another federal report says we need to do more.........what an absolute cluster f*$k

With 1.6% of global emissions in everything we consume, nothing we do will make any difference directly. We could, however, make a strong political push in the world to adopt gen 4 nuclear instead of coal...that could make a big difference.

“Canada is doing more than it’s fair share to fight climate change, the rest of the world needs to catch-up”. Fixed it for you!

Neither is China and India

not doing enough to fight or kick out a corrupt federal government either. only country in developed world that doesn't let MPs call out their own party. dictatorship CANADA BBCBreaking cnnbrk

Get rid of cows ?

What was her last gig I wonder ?

So JustinTrudeau and the liberal_party lied and their CarbonTax isn't going to work.

Another tax coming?

Lol!
