Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant hit by drones, U.N. monitor says

KYIV — Drone strikes hit Europe’s largest nuclear power station, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in occupied Ukraine, on Sunday, significantly increasing the risk of a major nuclear accident, said Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Grossi said “no one can conceivably benefit or get any military or political advantage from attacks against nuclear facilities. This is a no go.”Russia seized the plant soon after its February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Shelling and artillery strikes have repeatedly hit close to the plant, at times cutting the electric lines maintaining its cooling operations. All six reactors have been shut down.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, the country’s top law enforcement body, announced an investigation into the strikes on the plant.
