Buckingham Palace, the Eiffel Tower and Sydney Opera House turned off their lights to mark Earth Hour last night.

Landmarks in than 180 countries across the world turned off their lights during Earth Hour to highlight the risks of climate change.

Calling on the world to ‘save planet Earth’, the charity said: ‘We are the first generation to know we are destroying the world.‘And we could be the last that can do anything about it. We have the solutions, we just need our voices to be heard.‘That’s why Earth Hour is so vital – it gives a powerful voice to people everywhere who want to put the world on the path to recovery.’

Students placed candles during an event marking Earth Hour at a primary school in Handan, Hebei province, China The mass protest was inspired by 15-year-old activist Greta Thunberg, who has drawn attention to the cause with a number of rousing speeches and has now been nominated for a Nobel prize.World leaders and influencers also flocked to social media to stress the importance of making changes to address global warming and climate change.
