Making polluters pay is a good idea in principle, but first Toronto needs to find evidence for the pollution damage

It didn’t take Alberta’s United Conservative leader long to react to the latest belch of green ideology from Toronto the Good.

Layton’s motion, limply supported by Mayor John Tory, made it to council on Thursday. City bureaucrats, already notorious for dredging up scary climate scenarios, could now spend months digging up data and massaging climate change risk into a big dollar figure. Whatever they come up with, a lawsuit doesn’t have a snowstorm’s hope in hell of going anywhere.

Let’s assume, for the moment, the accuracy of the statement that “a good chunk” of Toronto’s rising infrastructure costs are due to climate change. Let’s also assume that the following statement in Layton’s motion is accurate: “Extreme weather is already causing massive damage to Toronto-area infrastructure, homes, services and businesses. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, the Greater Toronto Area has had “six ‘100 Year Storms’ since 2005.

Another wrinkle is the role played by Toronto and provincial politicians. They enthusiastically built the roads and bridges that accommodate all the fossil fuel consumption that has turned cities like Toronto into thriving metropolises. Politicians like to have it both ways, in this case taking credit on the one hand for building roads and highways and then blaming others when the roads are used as intended.

😱Toronto...dumps its waste in landfills via transport trucks hauling to dumps outside GTA...double dumping fees, & create taxes on TO & residents not recycling more, for multiple vehicle ownership, for dumping raw sewage into Lake Ontario, etc

Big cities should pay for garbage landfill and sewer dumping into water ways

Automotive industry 2nd largest polluter , why not sue them as well. Oh yah to many people in Ontario employeed by the car makers.

Exactly, what damage? Lefty/Socialist Toronto City Council is as 'unhinged' as ever! Who's paying for their sanctuary city policies!?

The pot store must be open in Toronto

How about going after the oil users themselves including Toronto council? Without oil, we cannot sustain billions of humans.

I’m supposed to support going to Afghanistan because the Taliban or Al Qaeda allegedly wants to destroy my way of life. What am I supposed to do with this piece of shit? cdnpoli

Apparently city councilors have to much time on their hands, more cuts are needed fordnation If a homeowners quality of life changes(food, utilitys) due to increase in taxes, he can sue city council? whattaya think?

What next? Suing farting cows?

From first world to 3rd world in one green leap - idiots

Infuriating

Jr. Rub 'n' Tug gets silly...

The damage of hurt feelings

Two Ont Car makers shutting down & Toronto’s Councillor wants Oil Companies to pay for Climate change LoL Problem Solved Less Cars & SUV’s less demand for that terrible oil & gas. Sue Saudi Sheiks, Venezuela’s Dictator, USA & Africa they should pay that’s where Ont & Que get oil

Govt desperate 4 more $

They should certainly contribute much more for the clean ups and for the incredible consequences their reckless irresponsibility continue to reek. Instead they are capped and tax payers suffer the environmental consequences and pay for the majority of their negligence.

That massive ice jam in Labrador

They tried the same thing in Victoria. You don't mind the transfer payments.

Maybe we could sue the city if Toronto for excessive use of fossil fuels?

Meanwhile in Toronto......

You will be dead by the time we start suffering from the damages. So I see your point.

When will you in the media start holding these lying fools accountable for their stupidity?

intersectionalists and their religion of climate change.

Trudeau slams New Brunswick on carbon levy, questions Conservatives’ commitment to fighting climate changeThe federal pricing backstop comes into effect Monday in the four provinces that didn’t have their own carbon pricing system, including New Brunswick October can't come soon enough. Why in the world are these Liberals fixated on this? The Prime Minister and his elitist frat buddies just finished belittling and mocking the plight of the people in Grassy Narrows a far more urgent environmental issue. “Trudeau told reporters there needs to be a price on pollution”. A tax is a tax is a tax. Most products are already subject to customs and excise duties and charges, HST or a combo of taxes, import levies. Why not take funds to fuel excise taxes to fund green programs? Ugh!
