I put a new drink to the test in my search for a healthy, jitter-free dose of caffeine

It’s not the taste of coffee that puts me off and it’s comforting to have a hot drink in the morning. It is the effects of caffeine that I can’t handle - rather than feeling energised, I feel completely on edge.

Hearth is made from yerba mate, a popular drink in South America. It comes from a plant species of the same name with the dried leaves mixed with hot water to make a caffeine-laced drink. It is often drunk from a pot called a gourd. I was sent Hearth’s drinks to try out earlier this week. There are three flavours - blood orange and rosemary, pink grapefruit and ginger and peach and yuzu, all in 250ml cans.

However, this is not matched by the tastes of the drinks themselves. While obviously containing hints of orange, grapefruit and peach, it’s more akin to drinking flavoured water.
