£9.4m has been pumped into the roll out of the new fleet

Nearly 60 new fully electric double-decker buses are heading for the streets of the Liverpool City Region after funding of more than £9m was secured from government.

As part of the deal, the CA will also be contributing £22m in match-funding the the project. The new buses will join the city region's fleet, which is already made up of more than 70% or low emission vehicles.MORE: 'I had my day in court': Taxi boss says city has hundreds more cabs than drivers Richard McGuckin, Executive Director for Place at the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority said: “We’re delighted to welcome the announcement of our successful bid to Department for Transport’s ZEBRA 2 fund. We know this was a highly competitive process so this award speaks to high quality of our submission and the hard work of colleagues.

The Liverpool City Region is one of 25 authorities to receive a share of a total of £143m in funding that will bring close to a thousand new zero-emission buses into service.
