Professor Debra Cushing believes that King George Square in Brisbane needs improvements to showcase the city's sustainability and address the effects of climate change and urban heat island.

In summer, people don’t tend to linger in King George Square. Some find shade under a few trees, or in the bar that now sits opposite City Hall, but most use the paved space as a thoroughfare. Professor Debra Cushing, from the School of Architecture and Built Environment at QUT, believes the square is a harsher and hotter space than Brisbane would want for such an important civic space.

“As a central part of the city I think it is vital to showcase that Brisbane is a sustainable city, and one that recognises we are in a subtropical location that is getting hotter because of climate change and urban heat island effects,” Cushing said. “I think it is work putting money into improvements as a message – not only to the people who live in and visit Brisbane, but to the world – that we do care what our public spaces show.” The square had lawn and fountains until development of the underground busway prompted a rethink and a design competitio
