The research team at NCAR in Boulder wanted to know how a changing climate will impact the number of large wildfires burning at the same time.

BOULDER, Colorado — Climate researchers agree that as the planet's climate warms, wildfires will become more extreme. But it's not just the size of the fires that concerns scientists – it's when they ignite.

"If we've got more fires happening simultaneously, that could lead to a point where we don't have enough resources to fight them," McGinnins said. Based on climate simulations, the team found that wildfire seasons in which multiple large fires burn simultaneously will happen twice as often as they do now, and even more frequently in some areas.
