To quote one of my favourite meteor movies (Armageddon) 'it's a big ass sky' and space agencies are underfunded when it comes to looking for giant space rocks about to hit us.
I'm sure plenty of people were aware of it as it happened, the people whose job it is to defend the USA against nuclear missile attacks from China and Russia. Apparently a whale farted nearby too, that really did past without being noticed.
