Daylight Saving Time (DST) is an outdated practice that steals precious evening light and serves no real purpose. It was originally implemented in 1916 to save energy but has since become a burden. The author shares their personal experience of ignoring DST and sticking to British Summer Time (BST) instead. They argue that DST is a decision, not based in nature, and it's time to reconsider its relevance in modern society.

‘Through the winter I keep the same hours as I do through the summer’ . Your phone will likely have updated automatically while you were sleeping, so maybe you didn’t even realise it happened… until you wonder why on earth it’s suddenly dark so soon..

This time last year, I decided to do a little experiment. When the rest of the country changed their clocks, I just carried on with BST. It’s made up anyway, so I figured why not change it to suit me better? My little trick means that when it’s 4pm in gloomy Britain and the sun sets, it’s actually 5pm for me and trust me, that one hour makes a world of difference. I’ve been stunned by the boost it’s given my mental and physical wellbeing. It does require a little mental gymnastics to make sure I’ve got the time right for meetings, but the one time I got it wrong it made me an hour early, not late, so it wasn’t a big deal.
