The cost of the ingredients for a chicken tikka masala has soared by 37 per cent in two years - and climate change is largely to blame

The cost of the ingredients for a chicken tikka masala has soared by 37 per cent in two years – and climate change is largely to blame, has rocketed by 17 per cent in the past year – and it’s largely the fault of of climate change.

The total cost to make the dish from scratch now stands at £25.81, as the ingredients needed have risen by £6.94, or 37 per cent – since 2021, the analysis finds. “Many of us are having to cut back on takeaways and now even a home-cooked curry is rocketing in price, thanks to climate change’s impact on the weather,” said Roger Harding, Round Our Way director.

These reduce yields, destroy crops and affect livestock health which, in turn, leads to supply shortages and pushes up prices. “With climate-driven extreme weather wrecking harvests in the UK last year, and around the world this summer, we can expect to pay more for our weekly curry in the future unless we do more to reach net zero emissions, as an essential step to preventing the worst impacts of climate change.”and heatwaves are the biggest weather events responsible for driving up the cost of curry ingredients. Essentials hit include tomatoes, peppers, onions, rice and cooking oil.

Mr Lancaster added: “We know that climate change has had a major impact on food prices this year and last.
