Rochester N.Y. - Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) has installed more than 75,000 smart meters so far in its Rochester division. It plans to install approximate

Smart meters are electric or natural gas meter modules that communicate with RG&E’s systems wirelessly. They transmit usage and meter status data to RG&E automatically, enabling monthly bills to be based on use instead of manual meter readings or estimates. According to the company, this will give customers better control over their energy bills.

The Company began smart meter deployments in Rochester earlier this year and more than 190,000 smart meters have been installed across the state so far. Over the next two years, all residential and most business customers in RG&E’s service areas will receive the new electric standard smart meter or natural gas module.

The company says most customers will not need to take action to receive a new smart meter or be present to have the meter upgraded if technicians are able to access it. The Company is performing some Saturday installations for meters in the area.
