Under new rules announced on Thursday, the state government will enshrine in law its emissions reduction targets, as well as create a new stand-alone Department for Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water.

An environmental group has welcomed the NSW government’s decision to legislate greenhouse gas emission targets, but says it flies in the face of recent energy decisions.

Head of advocacy at the Climate Council, Dr Jennifer Rayner, said extending Eraring made it impossible to ensure emissions targets would be met. The NSW government says new legislation addressing emissions reduction targets will help with its renewable energy transition. The government says the new laws will attract tens of billions of dollars in private investment that will assist with the renewable energy transition, reduce pressure on power bills for households and businesses, and generate thousands of jobs.
